‘Beyond The Walls’
This project ‘Beyond The Walls’ is about my family’s connection to Derry. My family, for generations has grown up in Derry and Northern Ireland in general. I wanted to honour that in a way that highlights my familys history in Derry and by depicting what Derry is like now. This project is the comparison of my family archival photographs and my own documentary photography. It also incorporates written statements by my grandmother, of her personal experience in Derry, as well as newspaper articles.
This project is based mainly around my Grandmother and Great Aunt, their lively hood, their experiences growing up in Northern Ireland and what it was like for them being forced to leave. My family’s history in Derry is undoubtably controversail in ways. This project gave me a chance to learn about my family’s history, the history of Derry, as well as pay tribute to my Grandmother and her Sister.
This project started as a way to honour my Grandmother and her Sister, as well as a way for me to reconnect with that part of my heritage and to learn more about my family. This project also developed into a way to capture the unseen or covered up side of Derry. ‘The Derry’ my family experienced and the side of Derry that still exists today.
